Rugby legends to gather at La Manga Club for Help for Heroes
April 6th, 2012
Record-breaking former England and British Lions prop Jason Leonard tops the list of star names from the rugby world heading to Spain’s La Manga Club next month (May) to take part in the first-ever Help for Heroes Golf Classic, a charity golf tournament sponsored by QBE.
Leonard, capped a record 114 times by his country, will join fellow 2003 World Cup winner Mark Regan and ex-England captains Phil de Glanville and Dick Greenwood at the fundraising event from May 2-6, which is being organised by Rugby’s Golf Club.
Other rugby celebrities from the home nations including former Wales internationals Tom Shanklin, Jeremy Pugh, Gavin Thomas, Gareth Cooper and Mike Roberts are also set to grace the fairways at the award-winning five-star Spanish resort.
And the likes of ex-England aces Jamie Salmon, David Trick and Matt Perry have also confirmed their participation alongside Radio 5Live rugby correspondent Ian Robertson in the star-studded charity event, which is being run in association with QBE, business insurance specialists and an official partner of England and Premiership Rugby.
Leonard said: “As president of Rugby’s Golf Club and a keen supporter of Help for Heroes, I was delighted when QBE asked us to organise their La Manga Golf Classic. We’re all looking forward to it; the golf itself, the rugby fellowship and the chance to raise funds for this great cause.”
Greenwood added: “I recently had a wonderful day out at Twickenham running an event at the special ‘Help for Heroes’ match.
“Without a doubt, the best moment of the day came when a very quiet gentleman who had been sitting with recovering soldiers asked if he could make a contribution to Help for Heroes and handed over a cheque – for £20,000!
“It goes without saying I am really looking forward to supporting this outstanding cause further by joining Rugby’s Golf Club and taking part in the QBE La Manga Classic.”
The Help for Heroes Golf Classic features three days of competitive golf in a Stableford team format on La Manga Club’s South and North courses, with competitors playing alongside a different rugby celebrity each day.
Packages start from £999 per person and include four nights in the five-star Hotel La Manga Club Principe Felipe, breakfast, welcome and gala dinners and prize-giving with entertainment.
Non-golfing partners are also welcome to attend and can enjoy all the festivities for just £599 and all packages include a donation to the Help for Heroes charity.
The luxurious setting of La Manga Club is the ideal venue for the competition with its three championship golf courses perfectly complemented by the rest of the resort’s wide-ranging facilities, including a 28-court tennis centre and 2,000sqm spa complex.
