1st Seve Ballesteros Foundation Challenge golf tournament at La Manga Club a great success

La Manga Club, 18 June 2013 – On Sunday 16th June 2013 La Manga Club played host to its 1st Seve Ballesteros Foundation Challenge charity golf tournament on the emblematic South Course in order to raise funds for brain tumour research.

The prizes were presented by golfing celebrity and BBC TV presenter, Dougie Donnelly, who was a personal friend of the late Severiano Ballesteros.

The South Course was in fantastic condition for the more than 100 golfers who took part in the tournament.

The winners were:

Runner up – Dorothea Gemmacher

Winner – Andy McGill

Icelandic PowerLifters prepare for 2013 World Championships at La Manga Club

La Manga Club, June 2013. Icelandic Power Lifters Audunn Jonsson and Julian Johansson are training at La Manga Club for the 2013 World Senior and Junior Championships.

Audunn Jonsson (120+ kg bodyweight), is former world and European champion and this year’s bronze medal at the European Championships, with Squat of 405 kg, Bench Press 282.5 kg, Deadlift 352.5 kg, Total 1040 kg.

20 year old Julian J.K. Johansson (120+ kg bodyweight) came 4th in this year’s European sub-Junior championship, Squat 342.5 kg, Bench Press 206 kg, Deadlift 310 kg, Total 912.5 kg.

PlayFootball and La Manga Club join forces for the inaugural La Manga Club Sunshine Cup 5-a-side football tournament

PlayFootball, a leading operator of five-a-side football venues across the UK, has agreed a new partnership with Spain’s La Manga Club resort that will see amateur footballers given the opportunity to enjoy the same facilities used by some of Europe’s leading professional football clubs.

The partnership also sees the creation of a new five-a-side football tournament – the La Manga Club Sunshine Cup – which will take place at the resort’s state-of-the-art football complex, from September 13-15.

Open to any UK team, the event provides two or three nights’ accommodation, a PlayFootball organised five-a-side competition, welcome cocktail and a presentation dinner, with prices starting from €226 (£200 approx) per person.

In addition, La Manga Club will also receive promotion of its facilities and packages to the members of ROKO Health Clubs – a sister brand of PlayFootball. Both brands are owned by The Sports and Leisure Group.

Commenting on the partnership, James Bryan, associate director of sales at La Manga Club, said: “La Manga Club is all about enjoying sport in a unique environment and we welcome this partnership as another opportunity to engage our unique destination with active sports enthusiasts.”

PlayFootball’s marketing and brand manager, Mark Read, said: “We are delighted to be partnering one of Europe’s premier sporting destinations, and to give our players and community the chance to compete at a fantastic location for sport, used by some of the biggest club sides in the world.”

La Manga Club has been chosen as a warm-weather training venue by many of Europe’s leading club and national sides including England, Scotland, Real Madrid and German champions Borussia Dortmund.

La Manga Club launches Seve Ballesteros Foundation Challenge tournament

Severiano Ballesteros had a long-standing association with the five-star La Manga Club and the Spanish resort is set to stage a new annual charity tournament next month in honour of the golfing legend.

Taking place on Sunday June 16, the Seve Ballesteros Foundation Challenge is an 18-hole individual Stableford competition that will be played over La Manga Club’s famed South Course in aid of the charity named after the star, who lost his fight against cancer two years ago at the age of 54.

Raising money for research into brain cancer, the event costs €50 to enter, while golfers can enjoy a relaxing two-night stay at the award-winning venue including entry fee from €140 per person – based on two people sharing a room.

Ballesteros made his European Tour debut as a 17-year-old at La Manga Club in the 1974 Spanish Open – one of five successive years the resort held the prestigious tournament.

The European Tour legend was the resort’s touring professional from 1980-85, when he won three of his five Major titles, and his Javier continued the family’s association with La Manga Club by playing in the Spanish International Amateur Championship in February.

Gary Silcock, La Manga Club’s director of golf, said: “Seve Ballesteros played a major role in helping La Manga Club establish its name across Europe and it’s important the resort remembers somebody who was a legend not just in Spain but across the world.

“This new event offers golfers the chance to not only honour one of golf’s truly great players at a venue that he loved, but also raise money into valuable research against cancer and we are sure that everyone – whether they are members, locals or visitors – will get fully behind what promises to be a great day.”

Tennis: Kevin Anderson current ATP world no. 27 trains at La Manga Club

La Manga Club, Spain. 25 April 2013. La Manga Club is very proud to be playing host to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, currently number 27 in the ATP World Rankings.

During his stay at the resort, Kevin has taken time out from his training to work with La Manga Club Tennis Academy students and will be playing in an exhibition match at La Manga Club Tennis Centre on Friday 26th April 2013 at 14:00 hrs. Spectators are welcome and admission is free.

Afterwards, Kevin will be heading off to play in the Mutua Madrid Open - we’d like to wish him all the best in the tournament and the rest of the season.
